On September 14, 2006, the unique BMW Art Car Collection started its world tour through international museums worldwide. BMW cars designed by artists like Frank Stella (1976), Roy Lichtenstein (1977), Andy Warhol (1979), and Ken Done (1989) will be presented in the Gallery Petronas in Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia from September 14 until October 22, 2006.

Afterwards the "rolling sculptures" will travel to Singapore, to the Philippines in the Ayala Museum of Manila and the Artsonje Museum in Seoul, Korea. The travel will continue to the Art Gallery New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and the Te Papa Museum Auckland of New Zealand, before India's capital Delhi will firstly be the last stop for Done, Lichtenstein, Stella and Warhol.

In a parallel tour the BMW Art Cars of Alexander Calder (1975), Matazo Kayama (1990), David Hockney (1995), and Jenny Holzer (1999) will be exhibited throughout Taiwan, China, Russia and Africa. Stops are the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, the Long March Space in Beijing, the La Villa des Arts in Casablanca as well as the Central Exhibition Hall Manege in Moscow.

Subsequent to these tours through Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, China, Africa, Russia and India the treasures of the BMW Art Car Collection will be exhibited between 2007 and 2010 in museums in Turkey and the US before they return to Europe. France, Spain and Portugal have started close cooperations with museums.

The BMW Art Car Collection

Since 1975, outstanding artists from all over the world have been designing the BMW automobiles of their era. The 15 exhibits which have thus far been presented in the BMW Art Car Collection include works by well-known artists such as Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, A.R. Penck, David Hockney and Jenny Holzer. The Art Cars reflect the developments in art history with regard to fine art, design and technology and are displayed worldwide in major museums such as the Paris Louvre, the Royal Academy in London, the New York Whitney Museum of Modern Art, Venice's Palazzo Grassi, Sydney's Powerhouse Museum and the Guggenheim Museums of New York and Bilbao. In the future, too, Art Cars will document the fascinating link between art and technology in international exhibitions.

The initial idea for the collection, which was to have an automobile redesigned by an artist, was introduced by Hervé Poulain, an auctioneer and ardent racing driver from France. It was upon his initiative that his American friend, renowned artist Alexander Calder, transformed his BMW racing car - a BMW 3.0 CSL - in 1975.

The first vehicle to establish a symbiosis between the world of art and the world of motorsport later participated in the 24-hour race at Le Mans. Prompted by enormous enthusiasm for this work of art on wheels, BMW then decided to put its brilliant idea of establishing the Art Car Collection into practice.

In the years that followed, this unique combination of motorsport and design fascinated the famous artists of our time - Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol have all turned BMW racing sportscars into Art Cars.

The spectrum of designated models widened in the ‘80s; the painted bodywork was no longer restricted to racing cars that had taken part in the renowned 24-hour race at Le Mans, but now encompassed all BMW production models.

The concept of BMW automobiles as mobile canvases of symbolism and expression raced around the track creating stunning visuals envisioned by many esteemed artists.

This historical collection examines connections between auto technology and cultural trends during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Together, the art cars form a mirror of contemporary culture, as exemplary as it is unique.

Since 1975 prominent artists from throughout the world have designed BMW automobiles of their times, all making extremely different artistic statements.

Over time the BMW Art Cars have been displayed worldwide in renowned museums such as the Guggenheims of New York and Bilbao, the Royal Academy of London, the Louvre in Paris and the New York Whitney Museum of Modern Art.

There were 15 exhibits in the complete collection with four of these that appeared at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in early June 2007.

Sydney was the only city in Australia to showcase the collection including cars painted by the late Andy Warhol, Australian artist Ken Done, American minimalist painter and sculptor, Frank Stella and the late American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.

During the current tour, which began in Malaysia last year, the four cars have been exhibited in Singapore, the Philippines and Korea.
